Keys to Better Communication

Learn how to communicate better.

Release what you think you know. Intentionally release what you think God is going to tell you and listen for His voice.

Receive – open your heart.

Receive with an open heart before you respond in the conversation. Receive God’s Word with an open heart. Every problem in your life is a heart problem. (Matthew 13:15, NIV)

Repeat – repeat back what was said.

Repeat back what was said to make sure you understand. You don’t have to agree to understand how they feel. With God’s Word, when we repeat, we are agreeing with His Word in a way we can remember. (Proverbs 3:5-6, NKJV; Psalm 37:5, NIV) Sometimes speaking out loud can serve as an emotional release.

Respond to what you heard.

This is where you can respond or ask questions, but make sure the other is finished speaking. The better you communicate with God, the better you communicate with others if they, too, are also communicating with God. Tell God, “Here I am”. (Genesis 22:1-2, 10-12, ESV; Ephesians 6:18, NCV; Philippians 1:4, NCV)

Repent. (1 John 1:9, NKJV)
