Sermon Video Transcription

James Greer: 00:00 Well, we want to welcome the Alexandria Campus, Amen? They’re rocking over there. We’re so proud of them. God is blessing them, and Darrell’s shoes probably don’t match his t-shirt like mine do, but it’s okay. Ya’ll have fun.

James Greer: 00:14 This was not written in the bulletin, but you need to know it. The longer something exists, they easier it is to shift from the original intent, meaning or purpose. And it doesn’t matter if that’s church, home, marriage, work, if you’re not careful.

James Greer: 00:30 So this week let me tell you we’re going to be learning the purpose of the church and the power that’s available. What we’re learning today is the greatest shift of power in history, and you can be part of that. You can experience that power.

James Greer: 00:43 Next Sunday, we’re going to listen. I’m going to be teaching and preaching on the purpose of prayer and the power of prayer. It radically changed my understanding of prayer. So you want to be here for these next three Sundays. The third Sunday we’re going to teach about the purpose of boldness, and we understand the purpose of boldness; we get a new power in our boldness. See what happens is this, when we learn God’s purpose, God’s intent in a matter, and we do that, then we get to experience God’s power in a matter. Amen? You could almost say we’ve got the power. I’m telling you.

James Greer: 01:24 So the longer something exists, the easier it is to shift away from its original meaning and purpose. It can be that at Journey Church or a little seat church. We can say man, our original meaning and purpose is to bring those people far from God, close to God. But also, our DNA, our personality is always to welcome people no matter what they look like, no matter where they came from, no matter what they did on weekends, Hey, we want to welcome them and allow the Holy Spirit to change them, not us. Amen?

James Greer: 01:51 And then there’s going to be this radical shift in the big seat, the big church, the universal church. Matter of fact, the New Testament church, you’re gonna find out in the Book of Acts, it was so dadgum radical. They kept talking about and they believed in the resurrection. See, I think the further we get away from the resurrection, the less we actually believe in it. But they believed it was so radical that you couldn’t get anything to stop [unintelligible]. They were so bored. They tried to get people to refrain from talking about Christ.

James Greer: 02:21 Hey, this is going to give you a great opportunity. Next Sunday everybody wear their holy shift shirt, and it’s based on Acts 1:8, and you’ll get an opportunity. Most Christians are wimps. That’s how it shifted away. Most Christians are worried about did they know I’m a Christian [unintelligible], do they know I go to church? But see the New Testament was the opposite. They were so radical, they couldn’t hardly stop them from talking about it. This is going to give you an opportunity to be bolder. See, so let me give you an idea in the shifts that happened.

James Greer: 02:56 Prior to Acts 1:6, even the disciples said, hey God, are we fixing to have the Kingdom going to come to Israel? They’re talking about our earthly kingdom. He answered them and said in Verse 7, He said, No, it’s not for you to know the time or the season. Only the father knows that. In other words, when He was telling them there’s going to be this big shift in purpose. So, let me tell you what, it shifted from personal purpose to kingdom purchase. It shifted to kingdom purpose.

James Greer: 03:27 And then it said, and you shall receive power. When the Holy Ghost comes upon you, you shall receive what? Power. When the Holy Ghost comes upon who? You. You shall be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea and Sumeria, and the outermost parts of the world.

James Greer: 03:40 See, the greatest shift in power came about in the Book of Acts. It was shifted from the Old Testament to the New Testament. It was shifting from, you used to have to go through a priest and you used to have animal sacrifices. And Jesus Christ the ultimate sacrifice came, and He’s the only true and living sacrifice. There was a shift from going to just going to buildings to have church, to be personal it. The greatest shift was from limited power to certain people, pastors and Prophets.

James Greer: 04:11 Do y’all understand how powerful this shift is? ]unintelligible], this shift took place, you had to go to the temple, you had to go through a priest or you had to hear from a prophet. And now, He said, hey this unlimited power is available to every believer that believes in the death, the burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

James Greer: 04:31 So it is a shift from having to go through a priest or a pastor, to go to a person and that person is Jesus Christ. It says he’d broken down the middle walls [unintelligible] petition. It’s a shift from a physical temple and building to a personal temple. The Bible says, the body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. In other words, what’ you’re going to learn today No words. What you’re going to learn day…..

James Greer: 04:51 You can have church anywhere. If I said, what is church? Half of you would say man, Journey Church, because I do think it’s the greatest church. In fact, I think it’s the greatest next to Heaven. I think if I’m in heaven, I’m going to come down here and visited some…that great church. Amen? It’s a church; it’s a great church.

James Greer: 05:03 But, number one, I want you to know there’s this unbelievable shift in power. As a matter of fact, they went from being powerless, to powerful. And see, that’s what’s happening in the church. The church doesn’t seem very powerful today. They seem powerless. That was never the intent of the beginning of the church. Acts 1:8 says, but you who shall receive what? Power? That’s me. That’s you. We shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you shall be a witness to me, Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost parts of the world. It says, listen, I’m going to give you the purpose of the church. You individually. Brother James. Journey Church. I want you to know the purpose is to be a witness for Jesus Christ.

James Greer: 05:52 Do you understand this was written and when they were doing this, Jesus only been risen about two weeks. He came back. He’s personally talking to the disciples. He said, man, y’all saw me crucified. Most of y’all denied me. Most of y’all ran from me. Most of y’all were hiding, but not anymore. He said, now you James, Journey Church, now you’re going to receive this new power. See, it’s a power shift. It’s a power from a few to the multitude. It’s a power from the church to individual. Now I’m gonna tell you, when you really understand the purpose of your power, you get to enjoy it like never before.

James Greer: 06:29 That word, power, it’s where we get our word dynamite. Now, wouldn’t it be a shame if you had a stick of dynamite? I almost called some people I know and got some M-80’s. Ya’ll don’t know what that is. It’s a big [unintelligible], and I was going to light it and throw it in the trash can, but I decided I wouldn’t, only because I didn’t want to call the guy at 6:00. But anyway, it’s a picture a dynamite. Do you understand when you’re walking in the power and presence of God, you’re like a walking stick of dynamite? The problem is you can have all the dynamite. You can have all the power. You can have it all, but if you don’t know how to ignite it, if you don’t have to use it, it’s not very good.

James Greer: 07:06 See the word power means mighty, able, a new strength. I often quote, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Can I do everything? No, but I could do anything God’s called me to do, and so can you.

James Greer: 07:22 He said, look, you’ve got a new power now. You have a new ability now. You have a new strength now. And what Satan wants to do is shift you away from the original purpose of the church where you can miss the power that’s available to the church. And so, Satan doesn’t want us to think about that. He wants to shift us away from that.

James Greer: 07:45 In 2 Timothy 1:7, I have it written in the front of my Bible. God has not given me a spirit of what? Fear. A spirit of what? Fear. But, a spirit of power and of love and of a sound mind. You know why? You know why He didn’t give you a spirit of fear? Because have you ever been fearful of talking about Jesus? I have. Have you ever been? I can remember years ago when I was out to eat or went on a trip, I was like, please don’t tell him I’m a preacher. Please, because everybody’s talking. Everybody’s having fun.

James Greer: 08:21 Hey, but now God said, look, I didn’t give you a spirit of fear. He said, you had a spirit of fear prior to this shift in the Holy Spirit, but not now. I didn’t give you a spirit of fear, but of power (there’s that power) to do whatever I’ve called you to do and of love (so you have a new love you never had), and a sound mind, which is peace in a day to day situation. God said, man, when did all of this power and love come about? In the Book of Acts, when the new church was birthed, when the new beginning started, when the shift took place. Before the shift took place, Peter (he is one of the disciples), they came up to him said, don’t you know Jesus? No, I don’t know him. Yeah, you know him, and he started cussing and carrying on. He said, I’ll do anything to make people not believe that I know Jesus. After the shift, after the Holy Spirit came upon him, he said, man, you can do anything you want to. You want to beat me? I’m going to talk about Jesus’ resurrection. You throw me in jail. Which they did. Guess what? I’m still gonna talk about the resurrection. He went from being fearful to fearless. He no longer feared men. Men almost feared him because of the power and presence of God upon his life.

James Greer: 09:09 Man, Christians, we are to be bold and courageous. Amen? We have lost the meaning and purpose of church. You are a walking stick of dynamite. Learn how to ignite it.

James Greer: 09:38 The same Peter that was afraid – Acts Chapter Two. He gets up to preach and he said, they gladly received the word and they were what? Baptized. They received the word and they were what? Baptized. That’s why we celebrate baptism. In that day, there’s about 3,000 souls that were added to the church. That’s not bad. I’m going to preach today, and I don’t know if we have 300 here, but if we do, y’all all come to the front. Amen? But can you imagine baptizing 3,000 people. Man, it would be great. You’d have to take off work. You can just fill the whole Jordan River. I mean, I just can’t wait. And all of the disciples, everybody had to help. And, so, they baptized about 3,000 people. Hey, guess what? Y’all ready? That was the beginning of the church.

James Greer: 10:25 That was a shift. The shift from a temple, [unintelligible], it shifted to the people. Three thousand people is a pretty good sized church, amen? I hear people say, I really like to be in a small church. No problem, as long as it doesn’t stay small. The other thing, you wouldn’t have liked the New Testament Church, and you probably wouldn’t like Heaven either. But, you would like the New Testament church because it kicked off at the first service; they had 3,000 people. It wasn’t long, they had 5,000. It wasn’t long, they had 10,000. By the first three months of the church, probably one-third of all of Jerusalem had become followers of Jesus Christ. It was a radical shift in the church. Amen?

James Greer: 11:10 I don’t know what you think of when you hear the word shift. It means a small change can make a huge impact. When I ask you, “You want to come to church?” Sure man, I was thinking Journey Church. If these people say, when is the church? I say, man I go usually every Sunday. Every now and then I’m there on time because I preach, so I usually go to church.

James Greer: 11:43 But the New Testament Church was different than that. It was a gathering of people celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, of the living God. That resulted in a movement of God and people getting baptized. See, the church really is a movement of God. Man, I loved it this morning because I got here and I was walking around the back and I saw all the tables and all the people and they were all stirring around. And, I [unintelligible] and said hey man that is a movement of God. See, something that’s a movement has to move.

James Greer: 12:17 And at Journey Church, we have been so blessed that we have a movement of God. That’s what the church is. In fact, if you looked up the word church, really church, it never says temple, building. It says an assembly. It means that a gathering place, it means the called out ones. It means the follower. It means the movement of God. So, you can have church wherever you go. You can have church at home. He didn’t have church on the [unintelligible]. Everywhere you go, when you come together and you’re celebrating Jesus Christ, you’re having church. Amen?

James Greer: 12:52 A shift. Romans 8:15 says this: for Jesus, you didn’t give us a spirit of bondage again to fear. Why again to fear? Because we had a spirit of fear. Can I tell you something? We all wrestle with fear, but God says, I want to give you a new power (you ready?) to push through any fear. It’s not true that you won’t face fear. I do. You do. We’re gonna all do it. The difference is when you understand the shift of the Holy Spirit that lives in you, He said, hey, never again do you have that bondage to fear. But you received the spirit. What spirit? The spirit I was just talking about. You received the Holy Spirit and you become a witness. And how do you do that? Until you can cry out and say Abba, Father. He says, right now, you know. Before, you couldn’t do that. You couldn’t cry out to God the Father.

James Greer: 13:43 You had to go through the priest. Jesus Christ died. He said [unintelligible] that moment now I could go through Christ. I can go straight to the Father. He said, man, you don’t have to worry because the Father always takes care of his kids. Amen? The greatest shift. Straight to the father, and the father to us. You no longer have to go through a pastor, a priest or a place. Now, listen, I want you to come to church. Because they went to the temple, I think they learned about church. They went out and they became the church.

James Greer: 14:11 Let me tell you something – how important this shift was.

James Greer: 14:13 In Matthew 27:50, Jesus is on the cross. He cries out with a loud voice. Any yields up the spirit. When He yield up the spirit, that was his last physical breath. It also meant (are you ready)? It’s finished God. I paid the price for all the people’s sin. Do you know that the very next thing that happened, the very instant He took His last breath, God said God said, Amen. Behold, the veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom and the earthquake shook and the rock split. Do you understand the meaning of that? Do you understand there was unbelievable shift? Do you understand? There was a God in Heaven, the creator of me and you and the whole world, and He was saying, man, there’s going to be a time. The price has to be paid. Everybody’s sinned. I can’t come into people’s sin, but He said, Jesus Christ, my son paid the price. Amen. Bingo. I split the temple. That shows you. Do you realize how bad God wants to have a relationship with you? They’re very minute that He did that, He said, now you can go to Him, but He can go to you. What a shift. Do you see He wanted to be with you and how fast He wanted to be with you?

James Greer: 15:27 Second, there was a shift in the place. When I say the place, there was a shift in just coming to church in the temple. That’s why I meant I’ve been on this big kick – come to church, but when you leave (what?), be the church – that I want our people learn to be the church because that is the New Testament Church and the longer you get away from the original meaning of something, the more you shift away from it. And we have shifted away. The majority of the people even that come to church every single Sunday, they believe that’s the church and man, you come to church. But that’s not the church. We are the church when we celebrate Jesus Christ. Amen?

James Greer: 16:04 So in Acts 2:46, it starts out like this. So, continuing daily in one accord in the temple. They still went to the temple. But you know the difference now? They were in one accord. They had this unbelievable unity. Are ya’ll ready to understand? You know why you have unity? Do you know how they could have unity? Do you understand how they can have 3000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, and they can all have unity and you can’t even have unity with two people? It’s because they united in one purpose. They said our purpose is the death, the burial, and resurrection. Hey, they came the next time, and my purpose is the death, burial, and resurrection. My purposes is I believe that Jesus rose from the grave. My purpose is I have seen [unintelligible]. You’re not going to change my purpose.

James Greer: 16:45 Hey families, marriage: the main reason you don’t have unity is because you don’t have the same purpose. You want to have more unity? Have more purpose. Do you know why I think it’s so important that we shift back to the main purpose of the church? Because if we don’t, we’ll be like so many other places that have this unity all the time because they don’t know the purpose.

James Greer: 17:11 So, what they did was and, and, and they came into the temple in one accord. That’s how I want you to come to Journey Church. When you walk in the doors (I don’t think), it’s not like walking into your house, it’s not like walking into your job. And I want you to do that. But when you walk into Journey Church, I want you to come with one accord that our vision is to bring those people far from God, close to God one step at a time. That’s the one thing we can all unite on. Amen?

James Greer: 17:38 They began to break bread and they went from house to house. I wonder what they were doing? Ya’ll want to know what? They were fellowshipping, and they were talking about the resurrection. They even ate some food. They did it with gladness and simplicity of heart united in one goal, one heart. You understand how big a shift it was? It was a shift from a physical building, a physical location to a spiritual location that now lives in us. Wherever there’s a gathering, you ready? Wherever there’s a gathering and you’re talking about and celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, you’re having church.

James Greer: 18:20 That’s why I said we have to have a spiritual dimension of every area of your life. You can go and have a hobby and add a spiritual dimension and say, man, this is what’s going on at church. I got a two minute video, but we’ve got a free [unintelligible] book. And ya’ll come together and you pray together, you’re having church. They started out in home groups because I believe they needed each other, and they cared for each other and they encouraged each other. They were killing Christians and feeding them to the lions and putting them on the [unintelligible], and they needed to be with other Christians to encourage each other and I believe that all Christians need other Christians. I don’t believe Christians can do life alone. They didn’t do it then and they can’t now. Amen brother James! That’s good.

James Greer: 18:59 It doesn’t matter if they’re in a school. It doesn’t matter if it’s your hobby, but you understand the big shift. That was it. They maybe came to the temple to learn to be the church, but when they went out, they were the church. Do you understand they met from house to house? That’s the church. I want you to be in a small group at least. If not, I want you to walk out and see what’s available to be in one. See, the Holy Spirit can be in the temple, in the church, and man, I want it to because we have unity, but the Holy Spirit is also outside of the church and getting into small groups. Get in home groups. You come to big church. You leave big charge to learn how to be the church. It shifts from mainly…..

James Greer: 19:50 Listen, they were growing so dadgum fast [unintelligible]. He said, okay, I gave an invitation and 3,000 got saved, 5,000 got saved, and I said, okay, let’s all go to church and you all bring your Bibles. Do you know what they would have said? Number one, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Number two, we don’t even have a Bible. You see how far we’ve drifted from the church? They didn’t know what the church meant. They said, man, we’re having church. They didn’t even have a Bible, but they believed in the resurrection and the power of the Holy Spirit. See, we shift. We shift in the small groups and we’re one accord. And in the next verse, if you had read 47, and praising God, and guess what else they did? They had favor with God and with the people. And there were people saved every single day.

James Greer: 20:38 Don’t you want to be a part of seeing people saved, man? When people get saved and people getting baptized, man I can’t wait. I celebrate. I say, Amen. I high-five my own self. There’s just something special about sometimes meeting in a smaller group where you share God’s word. And you can share your heart aches, and you can also help meet the needs of other people. And, you can enjoy the favor of God.

James Greer: 21:02 Third, big shift, big shift. We’ve forgotten it because the farther away we get from the original intent, the more we shift away from, we shift from the purpose of the church.

James Greer: 21:17 The disciples (this is Jesus speaking to them). Ya’ll understand in Acts 1, and Acts 6, and Acts 7, and in Acts 8, he’s talking to them? It was the resurrected Jesus Christ. And they said, Acts 1:6, it said Lord, when is the time that we’re going to restore the kingdom of Israel? In other words, hey man, we’ve been following you. We saw you get killed. You got nailed on a cross. You went into a tomb. That scared us to death. We ran, we hid. You’re back. Let’s get the kingdom. You know what they thought? What’s in this for me? Start meeting my needs. Let me be at your right hand. Give me a big room at the palace. Let me have some of those soldiers. And he said, stop.

James Greer: 21:56 Verse Seven. He said, he said to them, it’s not for you, even though the time or the season which the Father has put into His own hands. He was saying, listen, before the Holy Spirit came, you were so focused on your own purpose. You were so focused on your own kingdom, and you still might be, but after the Holy Spirit comes upon your life, you become God focused. Kingdom focused.

James Greer: 22:23 Verse Eight says you shall (me, me and you, we shall) receive power. Man, don’t you want the power of God? He said, it’s when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Why does it come upon me that I shall be a witness? That’s the purpose of the power to me. When he said to me, he said, you be a witness that I’m not dead. I’m alive. You be a witness that I overcame the death, the devil, and couldn’t defeat me. I want you to know that, hey, you don’t have to worry about an earthly temple. You’re going to have a heavenly temple.

James Greer: 22:53 See, it’s only when you understand God’s purpose in any matter that you get to experience God’s power in the matter. So what are you? You’re a walking stick of dynamite. You just got to learn and say, how can I ignite that? It’d be like having a million dollars in the bank, but you don’t know that my account number. It’s in your name man, all you have to do is…..you go, yea, I don’t have the number.

James Greer: 23:18 It’s like having a stick of dynamite and you know the dynamite would blow up the mountain in front of you, but you don’t have a lighter. And the mountain is a type of a problem, and God said, listen man, when you got the dynamite, there’s no problem too big for me. He said the power is the mind, it’s ability, it’s a strength, so that I can do all things through you. I can give you a new power. I can give you a new ability, I can give you new strength. You no longer have a spirit of fear but of power, of love and a sound mind. He said, I’m shifting. I want you to shift Journey Church to line up with God’s purpose for the church. And the church said, Amen. Well, when do you do that? Let’s get ready to close.

James Greer: 23:54 Number one, you do that first of all when you accept Jesus Christ as your savior. When you believe in the death, the burial and the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and I love the Book of Acts because what they preached is basically one message. He’d get up and get prepared. Hey, you put Him to death and put Him on the cross. You shouldn’t have done that. And death, burial and resurrection, and they’d go to the next town. Guess what? He’s alive. Death, burial, and resurrection.

James Greer: 24:15 Can I tell you something? Jesus is not dead. You say why? If you’ve never experienced a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, the power of the living Son of God, today is the day for you to come. You ignite the power. When you understand that you will use it for God’s purpose, this is where it gets tough.

James Greer: 24:38 I’m going to give an invitation in just minute. What I want you to do is, if I asked y’all, if you want to experience the power of God, everybody in here will say yes. Amen? Are you willing to witness for Him this week? Are you willing to invite somebody to come to church? Sunday, everybody wear their shirts. And, when somebody says, hey man, it’s not about Journey Church, it’s about Acts 1:8. It’s about the shift in the power and presence of God, and we’d love you to come and experience the power. They experienced the power as they did what God called them to do.

James Greer: 25:12 The Holy Spirit is in you if you’re saved. He is with you and He wants you to overcome the fear of not talking about it. So first, you’ve got to accept Him. Second of all, you’ve got to know the purpose. Third, you’ve got to understand what church really is. It’s a celebration of Jesus, the resurrected son of the living God, that results in a movement of God and people getting baptized.

James Greer: 25:36 Man, we are so blessed at Journey Church. You don’t just come church, you’re part of a movement. And, they went house to house and they shared. And they would outgrow that group and they’d have to have other groups. They just went house to house now. They met in small groups. You know I think you come to big church, you get big, and you get smaller. If you’re here today and you’ve never been in a small group or never considered it, after the invitation, I’m going to give you an opportunity to walk right out there. Richie will be there.

James Greer: 26:01 I want you to stand. I want to pray with you, and I want to pray for you. I want to pray that the power and presence of God be upon you. God, I just love you. I thank you for the shift in the power of the Holy Spirit. I thank you that it shifted from just a few to everybody. Everybody here at this church can have it. Because so many here never knew the real purpose of the power. They missed the power. Satan has blinded them to it. But today, there’s some that God’s called to accept Jesus as their savior. Some have been called to follow through in baptism. Some have come to rededicate their lives. Some will say I’m going to cast out a spirit of fear, and I’m going to have a spirit of power, love and a sound mind. Or some of them are going to open their eyes to the devil that’s been trying to defeat them and discourage them, and they’re going to say greater is He that is in me than he that’s in the world. Some of y’all, God’s called to join the church. Some of ya’ll God has called to pray together and to stay together. I don’t know what God’s called you to do. What I pray this morning is you let God have His will and His way. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
